গোসল ফরজ অবস্থায় বালতিসহ যে কোনো পানির পাত্রে হাত ডোবালে ওই পাত্রের পানি নাপাক হয়ে যায় না যদি হাতে কোনো বাহিক্য নাপাকি যেমন মল, মুত্র, বীর্য ইত্যাদি না থাকে। পানির পাত্রে শুধু আঙুল ডোবানোর কারণে পাত্রের পানি মুস্তামাল বা ব্যবহৃতও হয় না। তাই গোসল ফরজ অবস্থায় গোসলের পানির পাত্রে হাত ডোবালেও ওই পানি পবিত্রতা অর্জনে ব্যবহার করা যায়।
যে পানি দিয়ে শরীরের নাপাকি ধোয়া হয়েছে এবং নাপাকি পানিতে মিশেছে, ওই পানি নাপাক বা অপবিত্র। শরীরে বাহ্যিক কোনো নাপাকি না থাকলে অজু বা ফরজ গোসলে ব্যবহৃত পানি অপবিত্র হবে না। শরঈ পরিভাষায় এ রকম পানিকে ব্যবহৃত পানি বা মায়ে মুস্তামাল বলা হয়।
ব্যবহৃত পানি দিয়ে অজু বা গোসল করা যায় না, তবে বাহ্যিক নাপাকি দূর করা যায়। অর্থাৎ শরীরে লেগে থাকা কোনো নাপাকি ব্যবহৃত পানি দিয়ে ধুলে শরীর পবিত্র হবে কিন্তু কারো অজু না থাকলে বা গোসল ফরজ হলে ব্যবহৃত পানি দিয়ে অজু-গোসলের মাধ্যমে পবিত্রতা অর্জন করা যাবে না।
গোসলের পানি যেহেতু অপবিত্র নয়, তাই গোসলের সময় ব্যবহৃত পানি শরীর থেকে অল্প কিছু পানি গড়িয়ে বালতিতে পড়লে বালতির পানি অপবিত্র হবে না বা ওই পানি দিয়ে অজু-গোসল করা অবৈধ হবে না। এক বর্ণনায় এসছে,
فِي إِنَائِهِ مِنْ غُسْلِهِ، فَقَالَ: لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ
হযরত আবদুল্লাহ ইবনে আব্বাস (রা.) ফরজ গোসলের সময় পাত্রে পানির ছিটা পড়া সম্পর্কে বলেন, এতে কোনো সমস্যা নেই। (মুসান্নাফে ইবনে আবি শাইবা: ৭৮৯)
তবে বালতিতে যদি অনেক বেশি ব্যবহৃত পানি পড়ে, অব্যবহৃত পানির চেয়ে ব্যবহৃত পানির পরিমাণ বেড়ে যায়, তাহলে তা দিয়ে অজু-গোসল হবে না।
